Welcome back. This specific episode is about how to set goals for YouTube. We’re doing a whole series with Krista. We’re launching her YouTube channel. And goals are really important because if you want to accomplish something, if you want your YouTube channel to get you results, you’ve got to have clear goals and so we’re going to dive really deep into that. Alright, so right before we turn the camera on, you mentioned that you tend to set aside things that relate to your sole purpose. In a previous episode, we went deep into what your sole purpose is. And so what do you mean by you set it aside? -I’ve been doing that my whole life. It’s… I kind of think, “You know what? I’ll get to this task list of the day and I’ll get to the really important stuff later.” And it’s almost like there are just so many distractions that if I can distract myself long enough, I don’t need to go there but I don’t know why. Well, that’s more important it’s more fulfilling. Maybe because it’s more vulnerable. -So, how long have you felt drawn or purpose driven in this direction? -This is kind of crazy. Almost my whole life. I remember being in high school and thinking I had things to share then and I had a real life. You know? But I was writing at the time and feeling like I had enough that was soul-searching, introspective understanding that I gained even at that time. -Yeah. I’m excited that we’re doing this series because not only is it helpful for those that are watching to recognize some of the obstacles that they might be facing in our challenges. But we’re actually in the next episode, we’re going to launch into doing your topic brainstorm. The episode after that, we’re going to do the keyword research. So, we’re actually going to start. But we’re not procrastinating this anymore. -It’s probably about time. -So, in a previous episode, we did talk about one of your goals for this channel is you want to speak. So, if you can build a following in a tribe and from that influence be able to be invited for speaking opportunities, that’s one of the goals that you have? -Yeah. -What are some other outcomes that you hope that this channel can bring you? -To be honest, I write a lot. I actually graduated in journalism. And I felt like I was called to write. And I like that idea because it preserves it for different purposes but for generations perhaps. So, maybe a book. Maybe blog. -Okay, so you want to be able to write a book or a blog and how will you to help that? -I think giving my content first off for free in a way that just allows me to be authentic and have my own voice heard, it’s very different from a written platform. And so if you hear me and know me first, then in that way, it might be a little bit more intriguing to read something. I sometimes find with an audio book. I feel like I know somebody a little bit better and then when I read future works, I can almost hear it with their voice as I read. -I’ll confirm what you’ve said. That it actually, it does really work. People really will build a relationship with you on YouTube. When they’re ready to really like learn and go deeper with it, they’ll don’t get a book. I’ve done that many times and there’s a lot of people that are able to solve lots of books because of building a following first. The other thing that you’ll find is that in teaching content developing your content in video form, you think about it a lot more it becomes front of mine and a lot more and it will actually help the process of getting a book written. I’ve had I had a book in my mind for many many years. -I have too. -And now it’s actually in the works. There’s writing. It’s in black and white on my computer in progress because of the work I’m doing on YouTube. -That’s exciting. Because it’s actually a lot more fulfilling than the little tests that we might check off and think that that’s what the link is I can see the checkmarks. But to actually do something that is meaningful to me what matters so much more in the long run. -Well for me, I’ve got I’ve got real big hopes and aspirations from my book. I don’t want to write a book and have it be a glorified of business card. I want to write a book whether it becomes a New York Times bestseller or not I wanted to be that caliber. And I’m not really interested in doing the marketing campaigns that will get that status and get that sticker. I want it to be that impactful. And so I really… I want to do it the right way. And and so although the development… If I would have just written a book a few years ago based on… Compared to teaching these principles over and over for years and making hundreds and hundreds of episodes and working with my clients on these things. A book is going to be a lot better in the future than it would have in the past. -Do you feel more confident about it? You think that your writing will reflect that? -Yeah, I mean I… I’ve had this desire to write this book before I had a track record of success. So, before I even had confidence or before some of these principles actually made me successful. So, it’s kind of interesting that I knew I wanted to write it. But I guess I like the confidence even than to write it. In monetizing your YouTube channel. one of the easiest ways to do that, beyond Adsense and the ad revenue is through having something to sell like a course or a program even an event or some type of a coaching program or a membership site. Do you… Can you envision those? Have you ever thought about creating those type of things? -I have thought about it. I won’t rule out as a possibility. I don’t know that it’s a specific goal of mine yet. -So, what I want to do is just open your mind that that’s something that is going to be the easiest way to monetize your channel. And as we launch the channel, just think of the first several months as laying the foundation. And at about the 4 month mark, if you follow my formula that I’m going to teach in this series, one of the steps is you’ve got to post 5 episodes a week for 4 months. Okay. So, setting realistic expectations, that’s a lot. But if you do that, you’ll get a spike. And when that spike happens, basically YouTube will tell you which area you should focus on first. So, like with Paul Jenkins, the first video of his that spiked was how to get your kids to listen without yelling. And so, we started making more videos on that line and we started making a course on how to get your gets to listen. I’m going to predict that that same exact thing is gonna happen for you that one video will spike at the four month mark and that will give you some type of indication on where most your interest will be and where you might want to consider creating a course. So, I really want to talk about realistic expectations and I always have this conversation with my clients. Even though it discourages some from working with me. Because my services are over $100,000. I let them know, “You know what? You’re probably not going to make a return on your investment for 12 to 18 months to where it’s a real significant investment.” At the 4 month mark, you can expect to spike. You’ll start to get a lead here, a lead there. 6 months, you’ll start to get multiple leads coming in and then it starts to build momentum to where 12 to 18 months, that 6-figure investment should turn into a seven-figure annual return. -So, don’t get discouraged too easily so soon? -So, it’s a huge potential but the question that I ask my clients is and just think about this for yourself. “If you were to invest $100,000. And not make any return on it for the next year, would you be okay with that?” -Personally I think so. If the purpose is intent. -You’ve got to have that attitude and if anyone that I asked says, no then I’m like, “Then this isn’t the right strategy.” We’re not… We’re not… You know, their business might not be in the right place for that. So, why do you say… Why do you say yes? -Because it fulfills something more important to me than the money. And so, that fulfillment is a first priority. And then when it’s monetized then you can continue with it and it just enhances what you’ve already built. -So, here’s what to expect in the first 4 months. You’re going to be launching 5 episodes a week and you’re not going to be getting very many views at all. It’s going to be pretty boring. You’re going to just think “This is a lot of work that I’m not getting a lot of traction.” -There’s something kind of exciting about that to me though because it’s brand new, you don’t want to have a huge following, I’m speaking for myself. I don’t want a huge following before I’m prepared to have that. Meaning, if I don’t… If I don’t like the way it’s looking, sounding, growing, I want it to grow more organically. You get better, right? -You bring up something that that’s so important that a lot of my clients have a hard time grasping. And that is that you don’t have to have it perfect and polished in the beginning. We were about ready to launch a whole we had filmed 2 months worth of episodes. We were ready to launch episode one. 1 of my clients great friend, amazing person 1 it didn’t like the colors that were in the branding piece at the end. And so, we had to go back to the drawing board and change the colors. And it’s like, “You know what? You’re not going to get very many views in the beginning. And we can evolve and change those colors and future episodes we can modify things over time.” At the same time I wanted to be sensitive to her concern. She’s got a successful seven-figure business and has a branding all ironed out and whatnot. So, but that just that. Really emphasizes the point that the way you are in the beginning you’re going to be different. You’re from now, you’re going to get a lot better. You’re going to be more solid on your message. -It’s the first drop of a book and you don’t want everybody reading that. You kind of want it edited and edited and polished until you’re that ready to print that you have a really good following. So, knowing that you’re only going to get a small amount of use in the first four months… And then… The spike is not something that I control but it’s something that I predict and it works. The algorithm just works. And so, you’ve got to have… There’s 4 ingredients to get that spike to happen. And and what the spike really comes from is YouTube will take your content will start suggesting it. So, if you’ve ever seen a YouTube video and on the side, there suggest videos, if you want your video to appear there next to other videos or to appear on the home screen and people go there, then you’ve got to have these four ingredients. So, you’ve got to have your videos be 7 to 16 minutes in length on average. You need to launch at least 5 episodes per week. You’ve got to do that for 4 months consistently and at the 4 month market, you can expect the spike. And the fourth ingredient is your content has to be enjoyable enough that you have a good average view duration or a good average percentage watched. I shoot for 40 to 45% as a minimum. So, if… If you’ve got a 10 minute episode and people are at least watching 4 and a half minutes of it, then good. And you can go right into the YouTube analytics and it shows you what those stats are. -And where they drop off? -And some videos will be better than others. You’ll see some videos that have 7 minutes and some videos that have too. And so you want to pay attention why did this one…? Why did they drop off? What did I talk about it what did I do? You just don’t do that anymore. And so you’ll improve over time. -Seems like length would play into that though as well where people don’t want to necessarily watch a really long video of something is there an ideal length. -Yeah. I love to shoot for the 10 to 12 minute range. My best performing video of all time is over 20 minutes. -Really. -But it’s pretty rare on that channel. At least back then that we filmed that long. A lot of people think that shorter is better. That’s definitely the case for a promo video. Commercial. Because you’ve got a… Sometimes 30 seconds like a Superbowl commercial is so short they just put so much into it. -Yeah. -You don’t have to do that on YouTube. People expect to be 10 and 11, 12 minutes on a YouTube episode. And when you’re teaching somebody, we’re answering a how-to question. People will stick around and yeah, that’s kind of the ideal length. The YouTube actually is published… They like videos between the 7 and 16 minute range. And yet the fact that I’ve had in my 20 minute episode promoted by YouTube and it’s gotten over 5 million views, lengthy. If you keep people if you keep people’s attention for that long, that’s the point. You don’t… You definitely don’t want a 15 or 20 minute episode if people are dropping off with it min to 3. Anyway it’s just a whole bunch of wasted effort crate in that episode. Does that help? How was it as realistic expectations? -And I really like it though. That’s great. So, I hope Krista is that for the viewer that you found this video helpful as well and just being able to know what’s realistic and knowing that there is huge potential. There’s seven-figure potential in following this formula on YouTube. They’re just having some realistic expectations. You might have heard me mention keyword research in this video. In the next 2 episodes, we’re going to go into the topics a lot more and go into keyword research. And as a precursor to you, I want to give you a gift my keyword research guide. I go step by step on exactly how I do it. How I find the right topics to film videos about and it’s the formula that that’s made all my channels successful. So, you can get access to that for free.
