Monetization – it’s the YouTube way of saying you can make money from your videos. In today’s episode, Nate Woodbury is going to discuss how to put ads into YouTube videos. If you’re an aspiring YouTuber – stay tuned!
Okay. So you know that it’s… It’s possible to make money on YouTube. Many wondering, “Okay, how do I… How do I put ads on these YouTube videos?” So we know how to do that. We’re going to talk to you and answer that right here. -You know it’s really a rather dumb question. No, it’s not but it’s a common question. -Well it’s a common question but the answer is simple. You actually don’t. -Yeah, you don’t. -You don’t do anything. You don’t put ads on the videos because YouTube takes care of that for you. -And that’s what’s so smart about it. -Hmm. So, we’re going to… Going to make up for that, the insult today? -I hope. I mean, if you guys are offended, keep watching. You know, because he’s really not as mean as he looks. -No, I’m really good… I’m a really nice guy. -So let’s answer a couple other questions that you might also be asking and then you’ll kind of understand the whole picture of how you get ads in front of your videos, how you make money. So, but another question that people ask me is, “Well, why would I want to put ads before my videos? Won’t that hurt me?” Because you know, if I’m only going to be making a few pennies, they might have heard it makes a little money on ads and you know, I want people to watch my videos. I want to get more views. But think about it this way, YouTube is a company. They’re our business and they want to make profit and how they make profit is through ads. Okay? -I think we all are clear. -And… Well, YouTube needs content. They don’t create content. They didn’t very much. They don’t… They hardly… -They do some stuff but it’s yeah. -It just you know… -They do things. But still, even then. -Okay. -Now they have some… -We create a video and they put an ad before it. So we create the content… -Or in the middle sometimes. -Uh-huh. -Yeah. -Yeah, you can put ads in the middle. But essentially, we create a video and YouTube will… -They sell the ads… -Or sell the advertising space and that’s how YouTube makes money. And the cool thing is is that that dollar that comes in, 55 cents of it gets paid to the creator of that that video. So that’s really cool. And that’s what you’re hoping for here, right? You’ve heard of people making money from… From YouTube ads. And it’s really a cool thing that you don’t have to put the ads before it. YouTube takes care of that for you. But you might be thinking, “Well, how come none of my videos have ads in front of them? How come I’m not getting paid any money then?” Well, you have to qualify. -Yeah. -And the qualify… The qualification is actually really small. -It depends. -You guys need to check out the Scott Christopher channel he needs more subscribers to be able to qualify. -Yeah. -It’s an amazing Channel. Okay, what we’re talking about? -We’re talking about subscribers and why you need subscribers. How to qualify. -How to qualify, okay. So, you need a thousand. -Thousand subscribers. -Thousand subscribers. And once you get a thousand, you just have to ask YouTube, “Hey, can I be a partner?’ And then they’ll quickly approve you and you’ll start getting ads in front of videos and making money. Now, it’s probably not going to be a lot of money. In general, here’s a general rule of thumb or default. You have to get millions of views to make thousands of dollars. So, if you’re making… If you’re getting thousands of views, you’re maybe… -Thinking… -I don’t know. Maybe a dollar. Just tens of dollar something like that. So, I do have channels that are getting millions of views and we do make thousands of dollars. But I have other channels that are brand new. And that even have qualified, they are part of the partner program but they’re only making hundreds of dollars or one that just barely you know, a couple of them that just barely broke the $1,000 per month. -I mean, we’ve been this channel, you just watched a commercial. You just saw an ad before we started this. And like I say, he’s only got 12,000 subscribers on this particular channel. And you know not a bajillion views of anything that we’ve done. -And so this…This channel… You know, I make my revenue in other ways. I obviously, I’m a YouTube producer so that the revenue from the ads is just like icing on the cake. It’s a four figure amount but it’s small. It’s a small four figure amount. –
So, if that’s what you’re looking to do, basically YouTube does that for you but you do have to qualify and you got to fill out you know, the paperwork’s, so to speak. I mean, it’s an online thing but it’s just fairly simple and quick. But you have to reach that threshold. -One other thing you might be wondering is how different ads will get paired with your video. And that’s also automatic. The advertisers can pick and choose who they want be advertising next to. But for the most part it’s automated. YouTube does a lot of testing. So in the beginning, you might have a video that gets paired with some ads and it performs and gets tons and tons of views and brings in a certain amount of revenue. But YouTube will tweak it and tweak it so that it can get more and more revenue for less and less views. Which is good for both YouTube and us as the creators. We start to make more… -Specialized. -Becomes more and more efficient. -Yeah, yeah. -And so it’ll test and tweak things and it will figure out, “Ooh, may be out of these 10 videos that it paired this ad with, these 5 performed better.” What do you think it’ll do? It’ll stop putting that ad with these other 5. It’s a complex program that figures it all out and does it way better than I think than we can do ourselves. -They earn their 45%. -Yeah. We have 55%. -We’re the majority and partners here in this business. Well, you are. I am… I have 165 subscribers. -Well, you’re number 167. -It’s going to go way up, yeah. -So, what other questions do you have about YouTube monetization because we know that you’ve got some of those questions and I’m in and around it all day long and so I just can’t think of what are the questions that you actually have.
